Zambry hints no snap polls in Perak

IPOH, Jan 27 — Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir declared he will not bend to the will of political rivals Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and dissolve the state assembly for snap polls. “I will not play to their game. I know what they are trying to do because I know them but I will not play to their game,” he said after chairing the weekly state executive council meeting here today.

The Pangkor assemblyman had taken over the state last February after three PR lawmakers turned independent and supported the Barisan Nasional’s (BN) 28 assemblymen to form the state government in the 59-seat assemby. Since then, PR has repeatedly asked for snap polls despite pursuing its case in court to reinstate Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as the menteri besar.

The Federal Court will give its decision on Feb 9 on who is the legal menteri besar in the Silver state. Zambry was careful to answer questions about any dissolution, noting that it was Nizar and his PR colleagues who had started the legal game. “They were the ones who brought the matter to the courts. It was not us Hence, it is not about that (whether to dissolve), about what you are trying to allude to, but I would like to stress here that I will not play their game. “This is not my game, this is not the Barisan Nasional’s game, this is their game,” he said.

Zambry also scoffed at the way the PR constantly questioned the impartiality of the judiciary, despite having been the ones to have sought legal redress in the first place. “When the court rules against them, they go around telling the people that the courts were unfair. But at the same time, they continue to seek for legal action,” he said. Zambry added that he would not take the PR’s bait and react to the opposition’s tactics and constant speculation on the decision by the country’s highest court.

“I will remain calm and continue on to the end. I am a man of principle so when the decision is announced, I will not go around questioning the courts if it does not favour me. “In fact, I want everyone to respect the due process of law,” he said. Meanwhile, while their PR foes are gearing themselves up to face possible snap elections, it is business as usual for the Perak BN government. During today’s state executive council meeting, Zambry said the state had discussed introducing an appropriate formula or system that would ensure the process of handling investments in Perak would be expedited.

“In the face of the present scenario whereby there has been an increase in investors showing interest in parking their businesses in Perak, we have decided to come up with a new method to cut back on red tape.
“We want to ensure that our investors would not lose interest in coming to Perak,” he said. As such, Zambry said that a specific time-frame would be given to all relevant state agencies handling the applications for investments and their performances would be reported to InvestPerak, the state government’s one-stop investment agency. “We want to see how long each department takes to process the applications,” he said.
